This series of work is about walking in darkness, visiting and photographing places not seen by me in light. Night time takes the photographed image out of context bringing change, turning ugly blots on the landscape into interesting often beautiful areas as lights shine through the smoke and steam of unknown industries.
Unseen dangers lurk in the darkness, especially for the photographer hunting for a safe spot to set up a tripod for the long exposures needed to capture the dark.
The lack of every day sounds adds to the uncertainty and mystery of the place. Night sounds can be unfamiliar, disconcerting, even frightening as the imagination seeks an answer and congers up it‘s own.
All images were captured in the South East of England in areas affected by our immense appetites for consumerism, which take up vast areas of the countryside. Found in the first instance on Google Earth where aerial views reveal the brutalization of the landscape from heavy industry.
Factories, docks, motorways, quarries and the final destination for our urgency to eat up the planets resources. the vast out of town shopping malls.
But a beauty lies in the darkness, in the unseen. Black is exciting, creating mysteries. Lamp lit areas float in pillows of blackness beyond which lies the unknown. Night hides the harsh realities of a ravaged land. Returning in the light of day will put the image into it's true perspective, these are not places you would venture for a day out.
