This series of images examines the traditional symbolic still life and has several different titles within the series. The work takes inspiration from the works of the Dutch master of still life paintings, Willem Kalf and the German painter Georg Flegel.
Within this context it also examines societies past and present. Our connection and disconnection with the things around us. Our need for personal gain and wealth, which makes the throw away life style we have all adopted, an easy choice. Taking for granted the continued seemingly endless abundance of food, productivity, growth and wealth, our society easily abandons what could be restored.
In this series we are left with a suggestive moment in time leading to questions that will never be answered and only arise due to the location, where the evident decay is in stark contrast to the table and it's arrangement of still life objects.
We look at the past and present in one image.
Quick conclusions might make the viewer more comfortable with the image but that is not my aim and I hope the viewer, given the past and present, will imagine the future.
